Open letter: Dr Miguel Angel Beltrán Villegas
Dr Miguel Angel Beltrán is a Colombian academic who has been imprisoned by the Colombian government since May 2009 without being convicted of any crime.
Dr Beltrán was arrested, tortured and imprisoned by the Colombian regime. He is currently standing trial on the nebulous charge of 'rebellion'. His 'offense' was to have published academic papers and articles questioning the Government's version of the Colombian civil war and to have made comments criticizing their education policy and abuses of human rights. We are deeply concerned that Dr Beltrán, like so many others in Colombia, has been jailed for his political beliefs rather than for any crime; that he is being deprived of his liberty in order to silence him and discourage others like him from speaking out. We believe that academic freedom and freedom of expression are fundamental rights, and a pillar of democratic society. Dr Beltrán's ongoing detention shows that the government of Colombia currently respects neither.

Open Letter to the President of Colombia
Dear Mr. President,
We, the undersigned, are writing to demand the immediate release from prison of Colombian academic Dr Miguel Angel Beltrán. Dr Beltrán has been imprisoned since May 2009 without being convicted of any crime whatsoever. He has been accused of 'rebellion' and branded a terrorist by the Colombian State, yet no evidence has been provided to back up the allegations.
We are deeply concerned that Dr Beltrán, like so many others in Colombia, has been jailed for his political beliefs rather than for any crime; that he is being deprived of his liberty in order to silence him and discourage others like him from speaking out. We believe that academic freedom and freedom of expression are fundamental rights, and a pillar of democratic society, but Dr Beltrán's ongoing detention shows that Colombia currently respects neither.
We therefore urge you to order his immediate release. The large number of political prisoners in Colombia's jails – be they academics, trade unionists, community leaders or other civil society activists – belies claims that human rights are being respected by the Colombian State.
We urge you to put an end to this shameful situation without delay.

Una vez más me veo enfrentado a la acción temeraria de un columnista, que de manera irresponsable descarga sobre mí, todo su odio y resentimiento, como si su condición de columnista de opinión de un importante medio de comunicación, le confiriera una patente de corzo para agredir y descalificar a cualquier otro ciudadano por el simple hecho de pensar diferente. ¿Dónde está la ética periodística de estos columnistas? ¿Cuál es su responsabilidad profesional? y ¿Cuál su rigor investigativo?.
Desde mi secuestro en México han sido innumerables las arbitrariedades y violaciones al debido proceso que se han cometido contra mí, entre muchas otras el derecho a la “presunción de inocencia”. De modo tal que he tenido que confrontar la agresividad de un Feliz de Bedout -que sustituyó su condición de comunicador social por el de Fiscal- hasta los recientes comentarios descalificadores del ingeniero Alejandro Gaviria.
El último hecho, en esta cadena de calumnias ha sido el del señor Cesar Augusto Castaño quién en su artículo “Los alfiles de las FARC” publicado el 10 de septiembre de 2010, en la revista Semana.com., se refiere al caso de “Jaime Cienfuegos”, “Un académico dedicado a reclutar universitarios especialmente extranjeros”.
Dice el mencionado columnista que “Él (Jaime Cienfuegos), como tantos otros, aprovechaba su condición académica para planear acciones o conseguir apoyos financieros en el exterior, todo en beneficio de la causa armada”, y aunque en un gesto impúdico el pretendido periodista, no hace una alusión directa a mi nombre -tal vez para preservar estratégicamente un resquicio de escape a sus infundadas afirmaciones- resulta clara su alusión a la sindicación de que soy objeto en este momento, por un fiscal de la Unidad de Antiterrorismo.
El señor Castaño que luego de hacer un pobre análisis de las acciones guerrilleras desarrolladas por las FARC en las últimas semanas, concluye su reflexión con un llamado a la “cacería de brujas” contra activistas, estudiantes, profesionales e incluso funcionarios gubernamentales “responsables del planeamiento de las acciones ordenadas por el secretariado” y que en su precario horizonte mental puede tratarse de activistas de derechos humanos, líderes estudiantiles, dirigentes sociales e intelectuales críticos, en una reedición de la vieja concepción de la “Doctrina de Seguridad Nacional”.
Lo más simpático del hecho -si es que a sus señalamientos puede dársele esa connotación-, dado que ellos colocan en peligro mi vida, es que el columnista firma su artículo con el pomposo nombre de “historiador militar” y pareciera más bien un militar, no porque los militares no puedan ser historiadores, faltaba más (hay bellos y rigurosos relatos históricos dejados por diversos generales que abrieron el camino al oficio, empezando por el texto de La Guerra de las Galias de Julio Cesar) sino porque la forma, el contenido y el estilo del señor Castaño, llevan a pensar más en los informes que hacen los agentes de inteligencia militar -con los cuales me he encontrado en este proceso que se desarrolla en mi contra- que están más interesados en buscar “falsos positivos” y chivos expiatorios.
Mucho aprendería nuestro columnista del oficio de historiador si leyera las aportaciones de las grandes figuras de la disciplina histórica en el siglo XX, como Marc Bloch, Fernand Braudel, Carlo Ginzburg, Edward Thompson y Cristopher Hill, este último, autor de una maravillosa obra sobre la revolución inglesa.
El artículo “Los alfiles de las FARC”, es un verdadero insulto a la inteligencia y resulta lamentable que medios periodísticos tan importantes cuenten con colaboradores tan poco rigurosos.
